Saints of Northumbria: Cuthbert.Aidan.Oswald.Hilda by Iain MacDonald, X
Northern Britain in the late Anglo-Saxon times was enriched by a flourishing of the Church under the leadership of holy men and women who left enduring traces on their society and landscape. Lindisfarne, Durham, York, Wexham, and Whitby were all important centers of cultural and social influence. The monasteries and communities of these seventh and eighth century saints were to be swept away by the savage attacks of the Viking from 793 onwards. But the colorful lives of Saints Aidan, Colman, Chad, Wildrid, Oswald, Hilda, Cuthbert and others, and the remarkable events surrounding them, were fortunately recorded by Bede and other annalists of the period. The account of their involvement in the power shifts between the Northumbrian royal houses, the struggles of the great ecclesiastical debate around the Synod of Whitby in 664, as well as the wealth of stories and visions, miracles and marvels that filled their lives -- these have all come down to us in the ancient texts. This selection draws on Bede's Ecclesiastical History and other early sources to provide an insight into the inspirational power of these saintly lives in their own day and for times to come.

On Christian Dying: Classic and Contemporary Texts
On Christian Dying: Classic and Contemporary Texts
On Christian Dying gathers original texts from the great saints and teachers of the Christian tradition to present 2000 years of theological wisdom on death and dying. Matthew Levering mines the best of classical thought with selections that offer both ancient and contemporary Christians as models for understanding. He includes writings from Ignatius of Antioch, the Venerable Bede, Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, Thomas More, John Henry Newman, and Dorothy Day among others.

Bede - Bede (Latin Beda), also known as Saint Bede or, more commonly, the Venerable Bede (ca. 672 – May 27, 735), was a monk at the Northumbrian monastery of Saint Peter at Wearmouth (today part of Sunderland), and of its companion monastery, Saint Paul's, in modern Jarrow.

Saint Egbert - Saint Egbert (died 729) was a novice in the Benedictine monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria in Anglo-Saxon England. As a youth Egbert travelled to Ireland himself in search of learning (as Ireland, at that time, had a better preserved literate tradition) and settled at the monastery of Rathelmigisi (Rathmelsigi), according to Bede, identified with Mellifont in County Louth or else in Connaught.

Leningrad manuscript - The Leningrad manuscript, sometimes called the Leningrad Bede, is an early surviving manuscript of Bede's 8th century history, the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (Ecclesiatical History of the English People). It is so named because it was taken to the Russian National Library of Saint Petersburg (later known as Leningrad) in Russia at the time of the French Revolution.

Adrian of Canterbury - According to Saint Bede, Adrian was born in Africa and was made Abbot of Nerida near Naples. He travelled to England with Saint Theodore of Tarsus when the latter was made Archbishop of Canterbury.

He was trained by the Roman Catholic Church. The first twenty-one chapters, treating of the Old and New Testaments, homilies, and treatises on detached portions of Scripture. His other historical works were lives of the Gospel of John. Bede practiced the allegorical method of interpretation, and was by modern standards credulous concerning the miraculous; but in most things his good sense is conspicuous, and his devotion to the service of others combine to make him an exceedingly attractive character.
